We recently celebrated a significant milestone in my Godfather’s life as he turned 70 in December. His family hosted the birthday celebration at Marco Polo restaurant in Wisma Lim Foo Yong in Jalan Raja Chulan, KL. My relatives enjoy dining at this restaurant, if we have dinners during CNY it is always the chosen venue! The restaurant is pretty easy to locate as it is opposite Hotel Istana and there’s usually sufficient parking whenever we dine there. It is also apparently one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in KL with its origins dating back to the 1960s. Marco Polo is also well-known for their dim sum. However, with the appearance of newer Chinese restaurants sprouting in shopping malls and hotels, I am honestly not sure which place serves the best dim sum now!
Yoke Lan who is my cousin’s wife, ordered a special birthday cake with colourful fondant for this occasion which my cousin had to pick up from Shah Alam! The restaurant had also prepared a chocolate cake which resulted in us having two cakes to devour during the dinner. Their family is actually living in Singapore but they returned to KL to host the dinner. Among the dishes that were served during the dinner were Roasted Whole Suckling Pig, Stir-Fried Slice Garoupa Fish with Egg Whites, Baked Fresh Water Prawns with Cheese Sauce and Braised ‘Fish Bladder’ with Shellfish and Mushrooms in Winter Melon. Since this was a birthday celebration, naturally we had to have Longevity Noodle and a giant Longevity Peach with mini paus hidden underneath! It was good meeting up with my cousins and here’s to good health for everyone!
